Affinity Enterprises gives tips on how to make working from home work for you

Affinity Enterprises gives tips on how to make working from home work for you

Everyone who is able to stay home amid the spread of COVID-19 should do so. But, how does this affect the workplace? Affinity Enterprises gives tips on how to make working from home, work for you.

“The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way people do practically everything, and that includes where we work,” says Murray Hewlett, CEO of Affinity Enterprises.

“For many South Africans working from home can be both a blessing and a curse. With many having to move the office to the home, it can be a challenging transition. Creating the perfect workspace at home that suits your lifestyle and work needs is crucial to a happy, healthy, and productive workflow.”

Murray says it’s important to establish routine, purpose, boundaries, comfort, and self-discipline to ensure a smooth transition.

It can be difficult to distinguish between ‘you’ time and ‘work time’ when working from home. Having a routine is essential to create structure and boundaries. Have set times for planning your to-do lists, reading e-mails, having Skype or Zoom meetings, and activating tasks. If you do break routine and work until the early hours of the morning, ensure you get enough sleep and then get back into your routine as soon as possible.

Understand what the purpose of your workspace is and ensure it’s conducive to achieving your desired results. You should have a clear space that is functional and has everything you need to work productively.

Set boundaries between your workspace and the rest of your home. Ideally, work from a spare room or office. If, however, you are working from a communal space in your home (such as your lounge or dining room), ensure your workspace is free from distractions.

Make your workspace as comfortable as possible. Your workspace is a place where you’re likely going to be spending several hours a day, so ensure you have a comfortable chair to work from, a functional desk, and a footstool if needed. Try to change up your posture every hour to reduce back, neck, and shoulder pain. Take breaks to stretch, rest your eyes away from the screen and mentally recharge throughout the day.

Working from home can take a lot of self-discipline. It’s easy to get complacent but always remember that working from home is a great privilege, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, so do not take the opportunity for granted. Stay disciplined and you’ll reap the rewards of working from home.
