Affinity Health for new moms and babies

Affinity Health is a multifaceted medical insurance scheme, which caters to people from all walks of life. From the elderly to newborn babies, there is a policy for everyone. Having a baby is an expensive ordeal. There are many fees to consider from the initial blood test after conception, all the way through to the birth.

Without the help of medical insurance, the cost of a C section, or even a natural birth could burn a deep hole in your pockets.

Why have medical insurance?

If you do not want to spend thousands of rand at a private facility, there are two options. Either, you can have medical insurance to take on some of the cost (although, you need to be an existing member for at least three months if you want your pregnancy to be covered), or you can go through a government facility. Bear in mind, government facilities are not necessarily free, and you will still be expected to pay a percentage of the costs for the birth and prenatal care, depending on your salary and tax bracket.

So what if I am already pregnant before I acquire insurance?

It can still be beneficial, although not necessarily for the pregnancy. The scheme may not cover the pregnancy or birth, but your baby will be covered upon birth, as well as non-pregnancy related conditions you may suffer from, such as should you catch the flu, or anything non-pregnancy related during gestation.

This means that there are fewer things for you to worry about while you are growing your bundle of joy!

Once the baby is born, Affinity Health’s Customer Care department must be contacted within 30 days of the birth to add the baby to the policy and arrange payment for the new dependant’s premium.

Should the new-born require medical treatment, he/she will qualify for the same benefits as the main member such as Daily Illness Benefit, Double Daily Illness Booster and ICU Booster. However, if the new-born is not registered within 30 days of birth, normal waiting periods will apply.

Why should I choose Affinity for my pregnancy?

Affinity Health not only offers a selection of Maternity benefits, but there are also special perks for new moms and babies.

If you are an existing affinity health member and you fall pregnant, you can make use of The Birthing Team, a professional group of maternity specialists who will add the baby to their Maternity Benefit for an additional fee.

The Birthing Team offers an end-to-end maternity programme, from pregnancy right through to birth and up to six weeks of post-natal care.

The programme provides assistance for low-risk natural births and clinically necessary Caesarean sections.
