10 Warning Signs Of A Mini Stroke

Affinity Health, a leading provider of high-quality health cover, is educating the public about the 10 key warning signs of a TIA and why quick action is essential.
A mini-stroke, also known as a transient ischaemic attack (TIA), is a serious warning sign that should never be ignored. While the symptoms of a TIA may disappear within minutes to hours, the risks are far from over.
“A mini-stroke is a medical emergency,” says Murray Hewlett, CEO of Affinity Health.
“Many people brush off the symptoms because they seem to go away quickly, but a TIA is often a red flag that a major stroke may be on the horizon. Understanding the signs and seeking immediate medical attention can save lives and prevent long-term disability.”

What is a Mini-stroke?

A transient ischaemic attack (TIA) occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is temporarily blocked. Unlike a full stroke, a TIA doesn’t cause permanent damage. However, it should be taken just as seriously. Up to one in three people who have a TIA will go on to have a full stroke, many within just days of the initial event.
TIAs are most commonly caused by blood clots, high blood pressure, diabetes, or narrowed arteries, and they tend to affect people over 55. However, younger people with risk factors such as smoking, obesity, or family history may also experience a TIA.

10 Warning Signs of a TIA

The symptoms of a mini-stroke are similar to those of a major stroke but usually resolve within 24 hours, often much sooner. If you or someone around you experiences any of the following signs, get medical help immediately, even if the symptoms disappear:

  1. Sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body, usually in the face, arm, or leg.
  2. Difficulty speaking or slurred speech.
  3. Sudden confusion or trouble understanding others.
  4. Loss of balance or coordination, sometimes accompanied by dizziness.
  5. Blurred or double vision in one or both eyes.
  6. Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
  7. Difficulty walking or unsteadiness.
  8. Trouble swallowing or a drooping face.
  9. Brief loss of consciousness or fainting.
  10. Sudden change in behaviour or alertness.

Even if the symptoms only last a few minutes, a TIA is a warning that something is wrong. Early diagnosis can help identify the underlying cause and allow for intervention before a more severe stroke occurs.

FAST: The Life-Saving Acronym

Healthcare professionals often use the acronym FAST to help identify stroke symptoms quickly:

  • F – Face drooping.
  • A – Arm weakness.
  • S – Speech difficulty.
  • T – Time to call emergency services.

What to Do if You Suspect a TIA

If you notice any of the signs mentioned above, don’t wait for the symptoms to pass. Call emergency services, use the iER app, or go to the nearest hospital immediately. Acting quickly can help doctors determine if it was a stroke or a TIA (mini-stroke) and start the proper treatment to prevent something more serious. Doctors may perform tests such as a CT scan, MRI, blood tests, or heart monitoring to detect blood clots, narrowed arteries, or other underlying health issues.

Risk Factors to Watch Out For

Several factors can increase your risk of a TIA or stroke, including:

  • High blood pressure.
  • High cholesterol.
  • Diabetes.
  • Smoking.
  • Obesity.
  • Lack of physical activity.
  • Heavy alcohol use.
  • Heart disease.
  • A family history of stroke.
