Affinity Health Explores Balance Difficulties for Seniors

Balance disorders are some of the most common causes of falls among the elderly. Affinity Health discusses balance conditions and treatment for seniors.

Is Balance the Same for Everyone?

Balance is essential for getting around, being independent, and carrying out daily activities. However, as we age, weakened muscles or poor vision can compromise our ability to remain steady on our feet.

That’s not to say that the natural ageing process has to mean you’re always on the verge of collapsing. If you or a senior loved one is having trouble staying balanced, it could be due to more than just the passing of time.

Some balance issues are caused by inner ear disorders. The vestibular system, known as the labyrinth, is the area of the inner ear that is important for balance. If the labyrinth becomes inflamed – usually resulting from an infection such as a cold or flu – it can affect your balance.

Other conditions that can cause balance problems include:
  • Circulation problems (high or low blood pressure)
  • Head or neck injuries
  • Low blood sugar
  • Nervous system diseases (including Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease)
  • Certain medications

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Balance Disorders?

A balance impairment can have a significant impact on daily activities as well as cause psychological and emotional distress.

If you have a balance condition, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • Vertigo or dizziness (a spinning sensation)
  • Falling or having the sensation of falling
  • Stumbling when attempting to walk
  • Feeling dizzy, faint, or as if you’re floating
  • Hazy vision
  • Changes in heart rate and blood pressure
  • Nausea

All the above possible symptoms may appear and disappear over short periods or persist for a long time.

If you have trouble with your balance, talk to your doctor. They will determine the root of your balance impairment and recommend an appropriate course of treatment. The good news is that, generally, it is possible to treat the cause to ease or eliminate symptoms of balance disorders.
